Description
Wassily Kandinsky’s Improvisation Gorge gathers jagged lines and overlapping colors into a steep, energetic arrangement. Blue, yellow, red, and pale green passages cross one another, with dark contours suggesting movement through a compressed space. The eye follows several routes at once.
The work grew from a 1914 excursion to the Höllentalklamm in the Bavarian Alps. Rather than describing the place literally, Kandinsky translates its impact into shifting color and direction. The image retains the feeling of a rugged passage while leaving its forms open.
