Description
Marcelle Lender sits toward the right of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s lithograph, with a black hat giving her head a strong upper outline. A darker, closely marked background contrasts with the faint indications of her gown. The different densities bring the face and upper figure forward, making the seated performer’s presence distinct within a restrained tonal arrangement.
Dated 1895, the crayon lithograph with scraper was printed in gray-black on wove paper and published by Edouard Kleinmann. The image belongs to Toulouse-Lautrec’s sustained interest in performers as people whose appearances can carry individual character. Its printed form gives that encounter permanence beyond a temporary performance. The portrait can be approached through its close attention to the named figure, allowing a seated presence to have pictorial weight in its own right.
