Description
At the Divan Japonais, Jane Avril sits in a black dress and large hat in the foreground, with Édouard Dujardin nearby and a cropped stage figure at the left. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec makes spectatorship part of the café-concert’s particular presence. Yvette Guilbert’s long black gloves identify the performer whose head lies outside the frame, connecting audience and act within one scene.
The 1892–93 poster is a lithograph printed in four colors on wove paper. Its graphic composition connects named figures with a public announcement, allowing the nightspot to acquire an individual visual identity. The work’s interest lies in that shared scene, where performer and spectators occupy different spaces yet remain parts of one continuing encounter with a particular place of entertainment.
