Description

Feast of the Rosary by Albrecht Dürer places the Virgin and Child at the center of a richly colored gathering beneath a green canopy. Rose garlands pass from hand to hand among kneeling worshippers, while angels hold a crown above Mary and a musician sits at her feet. Deep blue drapery, red robes and gold brocade give the foreground a ceremonial richness. Trees and distant mountains open the space behind the closely arranged figures.

Painted in Venice in 1506 for the German community’s church of San Bartolomeo, the work brings devotion and portrait-like individuality into a shared act of worship. Mary, the Child and the surrounding figures distribute garlands, linking the many participants through repeated gestures. Dürer’s precise handling of faces, fabrics and small details combines with a balanced central structure, so the busy assembly remains clear and harmonious. The painting rewards attention both to its luminous color and to the exchanges that draw the gathering together.
