Description

Agony in the Garden by Albrecht Dürer sets Christ’s prayer among rugged rock, leafy trees and sleeping disciples. The kneeling figure occupies the middle of the landscape, while the companions in the foreground form a quieter group of lowered heads and resting bodies. High above, a heavenly appearance answers the upward direction of Christ’s attention.

This woodcut, dated 1497–1500, builds the scene from strongly defined contours and contrasting pockets of shade. The landscape feels close and protective, yet the figure’s alert posture makes it clear that rest offers no refuge from the coming ordeal. Dürer gives the rocks, plants and gathered robes a compelling texture, turning the secluded setting into an essential part of the episode’s emotional character.
