Description
Edgar Degas’s Dancers at the Barre shows two ballet dancers absorbed in the work of stretching and practice. Their blue-green costumes stand against a vivid orange background, while inclined bodies and extended limbs create a chain of diagonals. The nearer dancer bends toward the barre, giving the composition a strong sense of physical effort.
Degas returned to and reworked this painting over many years, from the early 1880s to around 1900. Its concentrated color and simplified space bring the dancers’ movements to the foreground. The scene makes everyday rehearsal as visually absorbing as a performance, revealing the discipline behind ballet’s graceful appearance.
