Description
Asmodea belongs to Francisco de Goya’s Black Paintings, a group whose intended meanings remain uncertain. Its two airborne figures hover above a landscape, with one pointing toward a distant mountain and the other partly concealed by a red cloak.
The title Asmodea appears in Antonio Brugada’s later inventory and has been linked to the biblical demon Asmodeus. A separate interpretation identifies the flying pair as Minerva carrying Prometheus; this is a reading of the image rather than an established subject. The painting’s unresolved relationship between flight, landscape and the figures below leaves room for a more open encounter with its fantastic world.
