Description
A man bends toward a woman in an encounter where attraction and performance are difficult to separate. Francisco Goya’s Which of Them Is the More Overcome? turns courtship into a question of competing postures and intentions. The figures seem involved in the same exchange, yet the title refuses to make one participant its unambiguous victim.
Plate 27 of Los Caprichos, published in 1799, uses etching, aquatint and drypoint to give the encounter an intimate social atmosphere. Goya’s wit depends on the double meaning of being overcome: desire, persuasion and submission can each shape the scene. The viewer is invited to compare the participants without reaching an easy verdict. Its lasting interest lies in that uncertainty, where apparent emotion may also be a carefully managed part of a mutual performance.
