Description

Four men gather closely around books in Jacob Jordaens’s The Four Evangelists, painted about 1625–30. The Louvre identifies the white-robed foreground figure as Saint John and the writer at the right as Saint Matthew, while the remaining two lack identifying attributes. The composition emphasizes their physical presence and shared attention, bringing the authors of the Gospels into a space that feels immediate rather than remote.

Jordaens uses the group’s varied faces and gestures to give a sacred subject a strongly human character. Looking, reading and writing connect the figures, while the close arrangement encourages comparisons between youth and age, different expressions and different responses to the books. The painting does not require elaborate surrounding scenery to establish its seriousness. Its concentration comes from the meeting of bodies and minds around the act of recording and considering the text.
