Description

Gustav Klimt’s Poppy Field spreads a dense tapestry of flowers across a tall expanse of green. Red blossoms punctuate the field among lighter flecks, while trees and small buildings gather near the high horizon. With little open sky to interrupt it, the meadow seems to extend upward as much as backward, drawing attention to the intricate surface of color rather than to a single focal point.

Painted in 1907 and also known as Flowering Poppies, this oil painting belongs to Klimt’s landscapes associated with the Attersee region. The Belvedere emphasizes its richly patterned treatment of flowers and vegetation. Here, the repeated blossoms create a lively visual rhythm: distinct touches remain visible up close, then combine into an enveloping field whose structure is both recognizably natural and strongly decorative.
