Description
Franz Marc’s Large Blue Horses gathers three animals into a broad rhythm of curved necks and rounded bodies. Their intense blue forms stand against rolling bands of red, yellow, and green landscape. Pale tree trunks and pointed leaves add contrasting verticals without interrupting the horses’ close grouping.
Painted in 1911, the work uses color for expressive force rather than naturalistic description. The animals’ lowered heads suggest a shared quietness, while their forms seem to echo the hills beyond them. Marc creates a vision in which horses and landscape belong to the same flowing, vividly colored world.
