Description
Claude Monet’s view of Rouen Cathedral transforms a monumental stone façade into a delicate field of pink, violet, and blue. Portals, carved details, and towers remain recognizable, but their edges soften in the colored light. The pale sky and cooler shadows make the building seem to shimmer rather than stand rigidly before the viewer.
In his cathedral series of the 1890s, Monet returned to the same subject as light and atmosphere changed. Here, the richly worked surface carries as much of the experience as the architecture itself. The close view allows small shifts in color to animate the stone, giving a familiar landmark a fleeting, almost weightless presence.
