About Le Déjeuner Sur L’herbe (Middle Fragment)
Claude Monet’s Le Déjeuner Sur L’herbe (Middle Fragment) (1865–1866) gathers fashionably dressed figures around a picnic in a shaded woodland clearing. Sunlight falls across the white cloth and food, while tree trunks and deep green foliage frame the group. The contrast between bright fabric and cool shade gives the scene its freshness. This is a surviving central fragment of Monet’s ambitious, unfinished composition, distinct from the smaller studies he made for it. The original fragment belongs to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
