Description
Vincent van Gogh’s Street in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer follows a narrow lane between low cottages and dense green plants. Thick thatch and pale walls occupy the left side, while flowering vegetation opens along the right. The path narrows toward distant roofs beneath a yellow-toned sky, drawing the viewer into the village.
The scene belongs to Van Gogh’s encounter with Saintes-Maries in 1888. He gives the buildings a firm structure while allowing the garden and sky a looser, more varied surface. Contrasting blue, warm yellow, and green make the small street feel bright and intimate, with its familiar architecture seen through an unusually lively palette.
