Description

Vincent van Gogh’s Three White Cottages in Saintes-Maries places bright walls and thick thatched roofs beneath a deep blue sky. Red doorways punctuate the pale buildings, while green plants spread across the warm earth in front. The closely grouped cottages form a simple, almost sculptural arrangement of light and dark shapes.

Made during Van Gogh’s visit to the Mediterranean village in 1888, the scene shows his interest in local buildings and intense southern color. The roofs have a rough texture that contrasts with the broad white walls. Clear outlines and strong color relationships give the modest houses a memorable presence.
