Description
Paul Cézanne’s The Large Bathers gathers nude figures beneath trees whose branches form an enclosing arch. Seated, standing, and reclining bodies fill the foreground, with glimpses of blue sky and water beyond. Warm skin and ocher ground stand against darker foliage.
The figures and trees share a network of strong diagonals and repeated curves. Rather than telling a single story, Cézanne organizes bodies as part of the landscape itself. The scene gains its force from the relationship between the human group and the broad natural forms around it.
