Description
The Brook by Paul Cézanne carries the eye through layered blue-green woodland toward a narrow passage of water. A large diagonal trunk crosses the left, while an ochre, rocky bank gives the right a contrasting weight. Gray-blue ripples and reflected branches gather near the center. Cézanne lets distinct strokes build trees, water and earth together, making the landscape’s surface active even where the stream appears quiet.
Painted around 1895–1900 in oil on fabric, the work depicts the valley of the Arc River southeast of Aix-en-Provence, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its treatment makes balance between colors and forms central to the view. The stream does more than describe a route through the setting: it receives the landscape’s colors, joining the surrounding vegetation with the space that passes between it.
