Description
Paul Cézanne’s The Bather presents a solitary young man standing in a spare landscape. His hands rest on his hips, and one foot advances slightly, giving the front-facing pose a subtle imbalance. Pale blues and greens surround the warm, broadly modeled body.
The figure appears both substantial and exposed within the open setting. Cézanne uses changes of color to shape the torso and limbs, keeping the contours clear but uneven. The simple posture makes the relationship between body, ground, and empty space especially noticeable.
