Description
Paul Cézanne’s Bathers places seated and standing nudes within a lightly constructed blue, yellow and green setting. A seated figure at the left answers another farther back, while an upright figure and a slender branching form give the right and center their vertical accents. Watercolor and graphite leave the paper active between the bodies, allowing their arrangement to feel open rather than enclosed within a finished landscape.
The bather composition dates to around 1888 and occupies the front of a sheet with a landscape on the reverse. That working format belongs to the exploratory character of the drawing. Its combination of line and transparent color makes the construction of the group part of the viewing experience, keeping individual forms responsive to the space and marks around them rather than isolating them from the setting.
