Description
Pablo Picasso’s Woman’s Head confronts the viewer with a face built from strong curves, dark accents, and shifting planes. Green, yellow, and black tones gather around the eyes, nose, and mouth, while the hair and brushy background form a dense enclosure. The head remains recognizable even as its parts seem to follow different rhythms of shape and direction.
Painted in oil on canvas in early 1908, the work treats the portrait as an experiment in pictorial structure. Broad marks give the face a substantial presence without soft, continuous modeling, and the dark features hold attention within the changing colors. Picasso makes the familiar form of a head feel newly constructed, allowing its direct encounter with the viewer to coexist with an unsettled sense of volume and space.
