Description
Pablo Picasso’s Still Life with Casket, Cup, Apples and Glass arranges familiar objects into an unusually angular tabletop world. The casket rises at the back, while a pale cup and clustered apples occupy the foreground. A wineglass introduces a narrower, more delicate form at the right. Ochre, gray and muted purple passages connect the objects without giving each one a completely separate enclosure.
Painted in 1909, the work treats a still life as an investigation of shape and space. The casket’s faceted surfaces seem almost architectural, while the apples are translated into compact volumes rather than smooth spheres. Shifts of angle make the tabletop difficult to settle into a single viewpoint. Yet the recognizable cup, fruit and glass keep the scene grounded in ordinary experience, giving its restless geometry something tangible to work upon.
