Description

In the announcement for the Théâtre de l’Œuvre, seated figures in profile form an audience, with a stage setting beyond and text at the lower left. The densely worked image makes attendance part of its visual interest. The theater’s public identity acquires a human form through people sharing an occasion, rather than appearing only as a name on a brochure.

Made in 1895, the transfer lithograph used crayon and spatter, with text added by another hand when the design was transferred to a further plate. The image appeared in a theater brochure, giving it a role within something meant to circulate. Toulouse-Lautrec’s invention retains its own visual presence even within that practical purpose. The work offers a closer look at the printed forms through which a theater introduces its activities, joining an image to the anticipation of performance.
