Description
Dancer on pointe by Edgar Degas shows a performer balancing on a pointed foot, her arms reaching toward the right while the skirt sweeps left. The opposing directions give the figure an active structure, making poise appear as something physically maintained. Degas isolates the movement enough for the viewer to linger over the relationship between a practiced gesture and the effort of control.
Made around 1878, Dancer on pointe uses charcoal heightened with white on beige paper. The contrast gives the figure definition while allowing the surrounding sheet to remain quiet. The drawing makes a fleeting movement available for sustained observation, where balance can be considered through the body’s arrangement rather than only experienced as part of a dance. Its appeal lies in the concentrated attention given to a single performer and the exacting task she undertakes.
