Description
In Study of a Draped Figure, Degas investigates fabric through more than one view. A standing robed figure at the left lifts an arm, while a cropped torso and shoulder at the right offer a closer study of folds. Bright diagonal accents make the cloth stand out against the gray ground. Graphite establishes the form, and white gouache brings light to the surfaces that turn toward the viewer.
The study dates from 1857–58, an early period in Degas’s career. Its focused subject leaves aside a complete narrative in favor of the practical problem of describing a clothed figure. Dark and light work together to make the arrangement readable without filling every part of the sheet. The interest lies in the meeting of observation and construction: fabric becomes both a visible material and a means of understanding the body beneath it.
