Description

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec extends a recumbent woman horizontally across Collapsed on the Bed, with her red head toward the upper right. Warm gray tones and sparse surrounding marks keep attention on the settled body, allowing the resting place to remain lightly stated. The broad arrangement makes a quiet private interval feel substantial without crowding it with incident.

Dated 1896, the object is a lithograph printed in two colors on wove paper. Toulouse-Lautrec gives daily life a graphic form distinct from the public performances and publicity designs associated with his work. The represented moment can be approached through its intimate scale, where one person and a familiar resting place are sufficient to carry the image. The print preserves that quiet subject without requiring an invented story about the reason for the figure’s repose.
