Description
Paula Brébion appears through sparse lines in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s half-length portrait. A bent arm and hand raised toward her head give the figure a small but expressive movement, while the cream-colored ground leaves the marks open. The restricted setting concentrates on the singer’s gesture, allowing an individual presence to emerge without a crowded view of the venue.
Dated 1893, the work is a brush lithograph printed in light olive green on wove paper. Its restricted ink color connects the image with drawing’s directness, making the subject part of an album rather than a large advertising poster. Edward Ancourt printed the work and André Marty published it. Toulouse-Lautrec’s design preserves one encounter within the series, allowing the performer’s individual identity to be approached through a focused graphic image.
