Description
A man sleeps with his head resting at a desk while creatures gather behind him in The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters. The ordinary posture of exhaustion meets an increasingly uncanny company, making the surrounding darkness feel populated by what the sleeper cannot confront. Goya gives a moment of withdrawn awareness a vivid and unsettling outer world.
Designed for Los Caprichos in 1799, the image combines etching and aquatint to make sharply described forms emerge from broad tones. The design date is distinct from this later impression’s publication. Its enduring power comes from the relationship between reason, fatigue and imagination: the sleeping body remains recognizably human even as the creatures turn the space around it into a scene of gathering possibility and menace.
