Description
A woman and three men conduct a transaction inside a shop in Generosity versus Greed. The ordinary exchange of goods or money becomes a setting in which different motives may meet, with the title placing opposed values around the same practical act. Goya makes commerce a human encounter whose meaning depends on more than what changes hands.
The brush drawing from the Madrid Album uses carbon-black washes to give the small gathering a tangible presence. Its interest lies in the distance between an observable transaction and the intentions that cannot be seen directly. Rather than offering a simple emblem of virtue or vice, the scene keeps attention on people negotiating together, allowing generosity and self-interest to remain competing possibilities within a familiar social space.
