Description

Cléo de Mérode appears in a softly worked dark profile and bust view in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s lithograph. Hair and headwear shape the upper figure, while indistinct edges keep the clothing from becoming sharply enclosed. The close, oblique encounter gives the named subject an intimate presence rather than a formal frontal appearance within an elaborate scene.

Made in 1898, the lithograph uses crayon and scraper on China paper. Those processes bring different kinds of marks into the printed surface, giving the image a worked material character distinct from a painting. Toulouse-Lautrec gives the named figure a presence that can be considered beyond the passing glance of a public occasion. The print’s interest lies in that concentration, where a particular identity and outward appearance meet within a concise form suited to attentive looking.
