Description
Yoso-oi sits at her toilet in a dark patterned robe, with one attendant in red behind her and another kneeling below. Kitagawa Utamaro gives the courtesan’s preparation the character of a shared activity. The ornaments of her coiffure add another concentration of detail within a scene arranged around the seated figure.
Made around 1799, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Preparing one’s appearance involves time and attention, and Utamaro makes that process part of the subject rather than showing only its finished result. The image’s interest lies in the relationship between an individual and the outward presence she cultivates. It offers a quieter encounter with Yoso-oi, preserving the human activity behind a social identity associated with display.
