Description
In Courtesans Imitating a Court Procession, Kitagawa Utamaro arranges elaborately dressed women around a carriage and parasol. Ochre and pale red costumes move through a wide setting with trees behind, giving the gathering both ceremonial breadth and lively variety. The carriage becomes the center around which the figures’ positions connect, turning a procession into a richly organized public spectacle.
Dated 1806, the work is a triptych of ink-and-color woodblock prints. Its extended format allows many people and objects to participate in a single scene rather than reducing the subject to one portrait. The title identifies an imitation of court ceremony, making costume and arrangement part of an elaborate act of representation. Utamaro’s design invites the eye to travel through the procession, finding individual presences within the larger rhythm of the gathering.
