Description
A striped rat snake curves across leafy ground on the left, with a lizard or skink to the right, in Kitagawa Utamaro’s spread from Picture Book of Crawling Creatures. Poems occupy the space above and beside the animals. Their different outlines give the open-book composition a lively comparison between a long winding body and a compact, legged form.
Published in 1788, the ink-and-color woodblock page forms part of Ehon Mushi Erami, a volume combining small creatures with kyōka poems. Utamaro gives these modest animal subjects a complete pictorial presence. The pairing encourages a closer look at forms encountered near the ground, changing the viewer’s scale of attention without requiring a dramatic narrative. The page offers nature as an intimate field of variety, where two differently shaped creatures can sustain a whole image.
