Description
In Women Worshipping the Rising Sun, Kitagawa Utamaro’s worshippers gather along the shore beneath an expansive coastal view. Colorful robes, a child and pale carrying bundles give the nearer group variety, while the twin rocks of Ise appear in the left distance, joined by a rope. A low sun above the sea directs their attention outward, connecting the human gathering with the sacred landmark.
The Edo-period work is a triptych of ink-and-color woodblock prints. Its three-part breadth lets the shoreline gathering and distant rocks participate in one expansive view. Rather than isolating an individual worshipper, Utamaro connects different figures through the direction of their attention. The sea provides an open space between them and the landmark, giving the scene a sense of distance and quiet concentration. Human presence and coastal forms meet in an image of shared devotion.
