Description

Women sit and stand in long robes within a Yoshiwara interior framed by beams, lattice and open rooms. The wide view connects several positions rather than isolating one figure. Kitagawa Utamaro gives the named quarter a populated visual presence, inviting the viewer to move through the shared setting while allowing the relationships between people and architecture to carry the encounter.

The 1790 work is a triptych of woodblock prints in ink and color on paper. Its broad format allows the setting to develop through related sheets, bringing the scene into a lasting visual form. The image can be appreciated as a particular encounter with the Yoshiwara rather than a complete description of the quarter, allowing the represented figures and surroundings to remain open to close looking.
