Description
Hinazuru of the Chōjiya stands on layered bedding, her elaborate dress joined by attendants and a tree behind. The pile of futon makes her position distinctive within the surrounding group. Kitagawa Utamaro preserves a named courtesan in a particular arrangement, allowing costume, companions and the unusual support beneath her to shape the encounter together.
Dating to around 1794, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its Edo-period subject preserves a named courtesan rather than treating the figure as an anonymous example of dress or social type. The image’s interest lies in that specificity, allowing Hinazuru’s presence and the distinctive setting to carry the encounter without inventing an occasion or action beyond the documented presentation.
