Description
In this scene of preparations for Musume Dōjōji, Kitagawa Utamaro shows an adult seated while fitting a girl’s costume for the kabuki dance. The adult’s ornate dark robe contrasts with the girl’s orange clothing, making their close work easy to follow. A smaller picture of a monkey trainer appears at the upper right, adding a second scene within the same printed composition.
Made around 1795–1796, the work uses the e-kyōdai, or “brother picture,” format named in the museum record. The inset creates a comparison between distinct subjects, while the main image keeps attention on preparing the young dancer. Utamaro gives theatrical presentation a domestic point of entry through clothing and care. The different scales of the two pictures invite the viewer to look back and forth, connecting a practical action with the print’s more playful visual structure.
