Description

In Kitagawa Utamaro’s Three Beauties of the Kansei Period, three pale faces form a triangular group amid dark coiffures and floral kimono textures. The close arrangement makes comparison part of the encounter. Each woman keeps an individual presence while the neighboring heads and garments give the trio a coherent and richly varied form.

Made around 1791, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Utamaro’s design gives the trio a common space of attention, allowing the viewer to move between separate figures and their relation as a group. The work’s interest lies in that balance rather than a single dominant subject. Its appeal comes from the opportunity to consider both companionship and difference within a concise image whose human character rests on more than one presence.
