Description
In Paper Wasp and Hairy Caterpillar, a page from Picture Book of Crawling Creatures, Kitagawa Utamaro sets the two creatures within a growing natural arrangement. A hanging nest occupies the upper left near the flying wasp, while a leafy stalk climbs the opposite side with the caterpillar. Calligraphy adds another rhythm beside the plants, and the visible central seam preserves the design’s two-page character.
Published in 1788, Ehon Mushi Erami brought Utamaro’s garden-creature images together with kyōka poetry. Tsutaya Jūzaburō published the book, and Yadoya no Meshimori selected the poems and supplied its preface. The page gives small creatures a substantial pictorial presence without turning them into a scientific diagram alone. Nest, insect, leaf and writing belong to one balanced encounter, inviting attention to the lively forms that an ordinary garden contains.
