Description
Green morning-glory vines arch around an open pale center in Eugène Delacroix’s study for A Basket of Flowers. Dark leaves gather along the lower foreground, giving the curved growth a contrasting base. The image makes arrangement part of its botanical interest, allowing the open space between plants to contribute as much as the flowers and foliage themselves.
Made in 1848–49, the study uses pastel on blue paper. The medium places color directly on a colored support, giving the work a material character distinct from an oil painting. Delacroix’s preparatory image offers a close encounter with artistic thought before its final resolution. The appeal lies in considering flowers both as living forms and as elements being brought together, where a study can preserve the interest of choices still taking shape.
