Description
Hamlet and Horatio in the Graveyard by Eugène Delacroix places Shakespeare’s companions amid the solemn objects of the graveyard. Dark clothing, a skull, a spade and low, shadowed ground create a concentrated scene of reflection, with the pale sky setting off the figures.
Made in 1827–28 with brown wash and watercolor over graphite, the work uses a restrained palette to heighten its dramatic mood. The close grouping of the figures gives the literary episode an intimate, questioning character.
