Description
In Peddler Trudging Through the Snow, Katsukawa Shunshō shows a figure bent beneath a heavy pack, its weight pressing him into an effortful stance. The simple dark setting concentrates attention on the carrier rather than on an elaborate landscape. Identified tentatively as Ōtani Tomoemon, the actor performs an ordinary working identity whose bodily strain becomes the print’s most immediate human interest.
Made around 1778, the ink-and-color woodblock print belongs to the Edo period. A peddler’s journey gives the theatrical figure an everyday occupation, while the snowy setting introduces resistance and effort into that role. Shunshō’s image preserves this relationship between person and circumstance. Its appeal lies in the transformation of an ordinary task into a moment of performance, with the uncertainty of the actor’s name left honestly unresolved.
