Description

In Nakamura Tomijūrō I as Izaemon, Katsukawa Shunshō presents a standing figure whose long pale sleeve falls over a blue lower garment. Hat and umbrella add broad shapes around the head, while architectural panels frame the setting. The combination gives the actor a poised, distinct presence, balancing the flowing costume against firmer constructed lines.

Dated to the second month of 1771, this ink-and-color woodblock print belongs to Edo-period Japan’s culture of theatrical images. The actor’s name gives the work its individual connection, while Izaemon gives it a place within drama. Shunshō’s portrait holds those identities together in a form that survives the original performance. It invites attention to the way a familiar human presence can become convincing as someone else.
