Description
Nakajima Mihoemon II appears as Sadaijin Jihei in this actor print by Katsukawa Shunshō. Two figures occupy combative, struggling positions beneath a diagonal branch and architectural forms. Pale garments and decorative motifs remain distinct within the action, giving the encounter a vivid mixture of bodily tension and ornamental richness.
Made in 1776, the nishiki-e print was produced in ink and color on paper. Shunshō’s image gives the role a durable presence without detaching it from the person who embodies it. Its interest lies in that double recognition: the dramatic figure is encountered through Mihoemon, while the actor is remembered through a particular part. The print preserves an act of theatrical transformation rather than reducing the performer to a general emblem of his profession.
