Description
Ōtani Hiroji I is identified as a fish vendor, appearing in a loose pale-ochre robe with a carrying pole and baskets against a solid blue field. The practical load makes the role recognizable while the simple background gives the figure room to stand clearly. Katsukawa Shunshō joins the named actor to an everyday occupation, keeping performer and character distinct within the portrayal.
The color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper and belongs to Edo-period Japan. The dates attached to the actor’s name identify his life, not the production of this sheet. The work’s interest can remain in the particular portrayal, without inventing the goods displayed, a market setting or a dramatic story that the available record does not securely supply.
