Description

In his portrait of Ichikawa Ebizō III, Katsukawa Shunshō shows an actor bent into a forceful action, raising or extending a weapon toward the right. The patterned robe follows the angled body, while dark hair concentrates attention on the head. Rather than a quiet standing likeness, the image preserves a stage presence expressed through an urgent gesture.

Dated to the second month of 1774, the work is an ink-and-color woodblock print from Edo-period Japan. No particular role is supplied in the museum title, so the actor’s identity remains the secure focus. The image belongs to a world in which a performer’s name carried its own history. Shunshō’s print preserves that connection without requiring an invented dramatic episode, allowing Ebizō’s presence to stand as the portrait’s central subject.
