Description
Onoye Matsusuke lifts a sword above the head with both hands while another performer crouches nearby. A fence and tall vegetation establish the setting, but the raised arms and contrasting body levels give the composition its dramatic force. Katsukawa Shunshō lets the adjoining panels hold a continuous action, connecting the figures through the surrounding lines and the direction of their attention.
Created around 1778, the color woodblock design captures the tension of an emphatic stage gesture. The standing figure’s extended body contrasts with the compact pose below, making the encounter readable at once. Patterns in the garments add detail without reducing the clarity of the action. Shunshō turns a moment of performance into a balanced image whose sense of movement survives within its carefully organized printed form.
