Description
In Nakamura Tomijūrō I as an Outlaw, Katsukawa Shunshō tilts the actor’s torso into a crouching or striding movement. A broad reddish patterned robe falls over green legwear, spreading the figure’s energy across the image. The body seems caught between positions, giving the role a restless physical presence even within the still printed form.
Made around 1775, the ink-and-color woodblock print survives as one sheet from either a diptych or a triptych. Its original relation to neighboring panels therefore remains important, even when this image is encountered alone. Shunshō’s figure may have participated in a wider exchange extending beyond the sheet. The portrait preserves a fragment of that larger stage arrangement without requiring the uncertain whole to be reconstructed.
