Description
Katsukawa Shunshō presents Ichikawa Ebizō as an upright samurai before a fence. A pale patterned upper robe contrasts with the red, striped or paneled garment below, giving the body a clear division of color and form. The standing figure remains composed within this surrounding structure, making costume and posture the portrait’s most immediate elements.
Dated 1773 or 1774, the print was made in ink and color on paper. The date’s uncertainty does not obscure the work’s human focus: an individual performer supplies the presence through which a samurai character appears. Shunshō’s portrait preserves this moment of transformation. It allows the actor’s public identity to remain connected to a theatrical persona, giving the image both a specific name and a broader dramatic character.
