Description
Nakamura Jūzō II stands as a high-ranking samurai in a dark robe marked with round motifs beneath a bare branching tree. The quiet upright figure and the spreading branches give the sheet contrasting forms. Katsukawa Shunshō joins the named actor to the character’s status without allowing rank alone to define the encounter, retaining the particular presence of the performer within the role.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to 1773 or 1774. Made with ink and color on paper, it carries a theatrical subject into a form suited to repeated looking. The work invites attention to the relationship between the actor and the role, preserving the distinction between individual identity and the social character assumed within a performance.
