Description
Nakamura Nakazō I portrays a warrior disguised as a Buddhist pilgrim, extending his arms in light robes before a hexagon-patterned wall. Green in the foreground gives the figure a clear base beneath the raised gesture. Katsukawa Shunshō preserves a layered identity, where a named actor plays a character who is himself assuming another appearance.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to 1770 or 1771. Ink and color on paper preserve the theatrical transformation in a form that encourages sustained attention outside the stage. The work invites the viewer to distinguish performer, warrior and disguise, recognizing how a visible identity can belong to a role within a role and how portraiture can retain that complexity in one image.
